Sharon Olds has become one of my favorite poets for her amazing poetry and this is one of my favorite collection of hers
Pretty graphic. Not for everyone.
Beautiful book of poems.
Olds' poems are certainly moving. They are a fine example of how words can be strung together to create works of art in poetry.
Didn't arrive in hardcover as listed.
Awesome. Great work by Sharon Olds. But i dont always like it when she writes about her sexual relationships. Its a bit annoying because not everyone would like to read about that. Although this is no close to her other collections, she's a good writer, she can writes when she wants to.
Wow! This is the book that got me interested in Sharon Olds' work 13 years ago in college. So many poems have unexpected and unusual perspectives, little things that are usually overlooked, with a tactile excellence I only find in the best poetry. Some examples are "My Father's Breasts"..(."the black charge of the heart within...the smell of cracked pepper and turned earth"), the nape of her grandmother's neck in "Grandmother Love Poem" ("under the salt and pepper, she'd show me her true color...in the smoky light she would show me the pure black"),"Connoisseuse of Slugs" (..draw aside the ivy, breathe the odor of the wall...") and the ambulance men's reaction to Marilyn Monroe's suicide. Sometimes there are sexual themes, but it is not pornographic or crude, rather, elegant and respectful, and somehow she compares a slug to a naked man and it makes sense. One of my favorite poems has a math theme and is about her daughter at a pool party, it makes me feel like I am at the pool myself. The poems about her children are so heartfelt, one of my favorites is "The Sign of Saturn". I can tell she loves them more than words can say. The only negatives about the book is that some of the subject matter is dark, something I can only handle in small doses, and some of the beginning poems, usually dark, are too simply written and not as good as the later ones. Also some people may feel uncomfortable about the sexual themes about children, some could have been eliminated I think, and even though I think she meant it to be innocent; she is kind of a hippie, in this day and age it may be interpreted as something dark. The book is from 1984, and the poems were written in the 1970s and up to then, so it was a different, more innocent culture too. Overall, I think the book is excellent and worth reading. Some of the best poetry I've read.
If you are reading this you have probably already read Sharon Olds, and liked her enough to go back and look at some of her earlier works, but are fighting a tinge of reservation. Olds can be admired for the sheer raw guts she puts into her poems, the brutal way she expresses her internalized truths. Her honesty is alarming and alluring. But there can be a pariah quality to her, as well. I want to say she has a touch of Madonna in her ethos. At times she can seem to be sneering. This would be insulting, except her writing is so good we want to forgive her, and do - mostly. I find it frustrating when this tone creeps in, as it does here in one or two places. Another disquieting aspect of her writing is the inclusion of some very intimate aspects of her children at various ages and phases. I appreciate her words for their beauty but wonder if her children resent so much exposure. Fortunately, most of the poems in this book are full of clear, blunt prose that revoke the layers of artificiality that can come to accompany our memories of ourselves and the more painful aspects of our personal histories. I find her poems refreshing for this quality (even though thank God I don't have her history). So, although not all poems in this book avoid a self-aggrandizing, mock horror edge, and a few may upset tender sensibilities about what information we need to know about her children in order to understand her as a mother/writer, I enjoyed this book and would even recommend it to readers who have already formed some apprehension toward her work.
